London 2011-12 Olympics Overlay Project Manager Horseguards and the Mall
Role:- Project Manager for all technical infrastructure including power, data, audio, video screens, broadcast, lighting, timing and scoring, and containment.
Key skills:- Extensive experience and understanding of the technical issues pertaining to the delivery of complex events.
Challenges:- The site has unique and significant historical, environmental, constitutional, governmental, security and cultural features that added further dimensions to the resolution of the complex technical issues.
Sochi 2013-2014 Olympic Ceremonies Project Manager
Role :- Project Manager for Capital Projects and Aerial Track. The ceremonies in Sochi required a large capital program to facilitate the events. Initially based in Moscow, I liaised with the architect, structural engineers, arial equipment supplier etc and the ceremonies producers to detail the structural, electrical, data and related requirements.
In the second phase I was the project lead for the full team in Sochi, where I was the sole representative. In addition, this phase required detailed liaison with the construction company, infrastructure suppliers, and local and national government representatives.
Key Skills:-The ability to analyse, understand and disseminate complex technical design development issues. Maintain accurate project timelines with detailed reporting templates and critical path analysis. Ability to separate technical reality from aspiration, and present it in an acceptable form to all stakeholders.
Challenges:- A client with extremely high aspirations, political will, financial resources coupled with challenging lead times for delivery.
Rio Olympics 2015-2016 Overlay Project Manager
Role:- Project lead in a multi-disciplinary team for a three-parent company consortium tasked with delivering games-wide overlay for the Rio Olympics
Key Skills:- Management of a large pool of human and technical resources based primarily in Rio, but also in London and Montreal. The project had three main phases:-
1) Survey and assessment
2) Gap analysis
3) Specification
An historical understanding of the requirements at each of the above three stages enabled the appropriate level of refinement to be specified. Detailed understanding of the needs in each Discipline, Utility and Functional Area enabled the efficient use of resources at each stage in the process of specification.
Challenges:- Legacy issues relating to the FIFA world cup led to a hostile attitude to sporting events in some areas of Brazilian society and government. The unwillingness of the organising committee to address shortfalls between the I.O.C. commitment and their ability to deliver.
Jakarta 2016-17 Asian Games Velodrome Project Manager
Role:- Project manager for the construction of a new indoor Velodrome for the 2018 Asian games.
Key skills:- Liaison between the client, architect, sporting federation, partner construction company and Government departments. Providing a historical technical point of reference for the organising committee when assessing federation and broadcast requests.
Challenges:- Delivering a complex and technically sophisticated structure with a high specification for audio, video, lighting, broadcast and timing, and internal fit-out within a fast track time scale.
